Match the brand before comparing Japan and letter sizes
The ASOS table uses waist and hip anchors for briefs. The separate Triumph table shows why country labels cannot be added by a single formula: its Japan M corresponds to the published US XS/4 entry. That is a Triumph conversion and should not be joined to an ASOS waist or hip measurement.
For high-waist briefs, compare both waist and hips; for low-rise cuts, check the waistband position on the product. Coverage, seams and stretch influence comfort even when two labels match. Record the full brand and label when sharing a result so the recipient can open the correct table.

Stand naturally and measure around your waist with a level tape.

Measure around the fullest part of your hips, keeping the tape horizontal.

For a high-rise or low-rise style, also check where the waistband sits.
A few things labels don’t tell you.
When waist and hips point to different sizes, review both references. Elasticity and coverage affect the final choice.

Is a dress chart identical to an underwear chart?
Use the underwear reference: even one brand may publish different hip anchors for different product groups.
What is UK 12 here?
US 8 / EU 40, with a 75 cm waist and 99 cm hips.
